Annual Sivertson Gallery Inuit Premiere

GRAND MARAIS, MINNESOTA - September 10, 2018  (LSN) An extraordinary showcase of Inuit print art and sculpture, along with carving demonstrations and throat singing performances happening all weekend at the 18^th annual Sivertson Gallery Inuit Premiere. All events are free and open to the public through the weekend of Friday Oct 26, and Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018.

 

Every fall since 1959 Dorset Fine Arts, marketing arm of the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative, has released an annual limited-run print collection. The collection is released via approved galleries around the world, and for the past 18 years, Sivertson Gallery of Grand Marais, MN, has had the privilege of being counted among one of them. “We are the only authorized Cape Dorset Fine Arts gallery in Minnesota” says owner Jan Sivertson. People are encouraged to head to Sivertson Gallery on October 26^th and 27^th to view the print collection in person, for a weekend celebrating “art of the north”.

 

Also featured during the event is a specially curated collection of hand-picked, hand carved stone sculptures. The story of these pieces comes from the stones they are carved from. Stones are hauled to villages in the artic on snowmobiles from distant rock quarries, sometimes over 200 miles away. Featured Guest, Inuit sculptor and stone carver, Bill Nasogaluak will be giving a demonstration at North House Folk School at 2 pm on Friday, Oct. 26, 2018. He will also present as a part of a larger artist’s panel at 6 pm on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018.

 

Ongoing throughout the weekend will be live Throat Singing performances by Nina Segalowitz and Taqralik Partridge. Throat Singing is a vocal form in which a single voice produces more than one tone at the same time, usually as harmonics of a main tone or drone, traditionally practiced by peoples in central Asia, the Inuit, and Tibetan Buddhist monks.

Friday, Oct. 26

2 p.m. – 4 p.m. | Bill Nasogaluak, sculptor and stone carver from Tuktuyaktuk, Northwest Territories, Canada will give a carving demonstration at North House Folk School in Grand Marais.

 

6 p.m. – 8 p.m. | Patron’s reception, Sivertson Gallery, Grand Marais – Presenting the 2018 Cape Dorset Print Collection, short throat singing demonstration.

 

Saturday, Oct. 27

1 p.m. – 3 p.m. | Live Canadian Throat-Singing performance by Taqralik Partridge and Nina Segalowitz

 

6 p.m. | Guest panel talking about living in the north
