Casting Mamma Mia
THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO - August 29, 2018 (LSN) Prepare to leave the frozen shores of Lake Superior this winter as Badanai Theatre sets to transform the Paramount into a warm Greek island paradise for the upcoming community theatre production of Mamma Mia. Auditions begin this September as they are searching for a large and diverse cast to create this local production. “There are 13 main roles, a full ensemble, and groups of singers and dancers who are needed to be cast” said co-director Candi Badanai who is very excited for this show.
“Mamma Mia is the musical we’ve been waiting for!” says Candi Badanai. “It is a fun show with beautiful music that we’ve been waiting to be able to do here, and by the community response so far – we know others are excited too!” This Broadway musical features a large cast, non-stop laughs and explosive dance numbers, all set to the music from ABBA. “It’s a guaranteed night of non-stop entertainment that will get you out of your seat and up on your feet. Knowing our theatre patrons, this is the type of show they’re looking to see done by us.”
The Badanai Theatre (in partnership with Paramount Theatre and Paramount Live) will continue to build on the success of last year’s community production of “The Producers” as they mount this year’s musical of “Mamma Mia”. “The demand for community members wishing to participate in theatre - musical theatre specifically has been overwhelming. Audiences are looking for fun nights out at the theatre and community members are looking to just enjoy participating in a theatre show and having fun doing it” says Candi Badanai. “That is what our group and shows are about – making theatre fun again.” The group just completed a three week summer theatre run of “Downton Abbey Road” which also performed at the Paramount to full houses.
Over 60 million people worldwide have fallen in love with the characters, the story and the music that make Mamma Mia! ABBA's hits tell the hilarious story of a young woman's search for her birth father. This sunny and funny tale unfolds on a Greek island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter's quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother's past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.
Open auditions start on September 10, 2018 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Paramount Theatre (Maple Tops – 24 Court St. S.), with a second chance on the September 12 (same times and location). These are open public auditions and everyone is invited to come and give it a try. They only ask you to come prepared to sing a short section of a song of your choice, and the directors will ask you to do a short cold reading from the script. “Don’t be nervous to try this for the first time, just come out and do your best” says Candi Badanai. “It’s amazing to see how much talent we have in Thunder Bay and some people just need a chance to find their spotlight….we hope this is their chance to be found.”
Public performances of Mamma Mia will run February 6 to 23, 2019 at the Paramount Theatre. For more information visit the Badanai Theatre Facebook page: www.facebook.com/badanaitheatre/
