THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO - December 13. 2017 (LSN) 9 to 5 The Musical, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick, is based on the seminal 1980 hit movie. Set in the late 1970s. this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic.
The high energy Broadway musical 9 to 5 with music by Dolly Parton is taking to the Paramount Theatre stage this week. Pushed to the boiling point, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet (Katherine Nemec), Judy (Carly Martin) and Doralee (Olivia McInnis) live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot! While Hart (Jack Kotanen) remains "otherwise engaged," the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. Hey, a girl can scheme, can't she?
With themes of revenge and finding independence, 9 to 5 the musical features strong female characters who join together to get back at their chauvinist boss. “It’s fun watch these powerful women fight for equality” says co-director Candi Badanai. “While this is an old story based on the humorous hit movie from 1980, it still is relatable and not far from newspaper headlines of today” she added while describing why they picked this show for the senior musical production this season. “ There are a few mature themes that our senior students got to explore in this show, such as: discrimination, feminism, harassment. Serious topics that this group of young humans took to heart and have brought to life in this very comic story laced with Dolly Parton songs.” Co-directed Lawrence Badanai said “when we started the journey on this production, at first it looked like a light and frothy musical, but we all quickly learned that this musical had a great depth of material within the script and yet some beautiful and yet challenging melodies to sing.” This show features a cast of 25 talented young actors who have been working on this production since September and are eager to give audiences a great show.
