THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  October 17, 2017   (LSN)  Magnus Theatre presents Only Drunks and Children,  Tell the TruthWinner of the 1996 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Play, Only Drunks and Children Tell the Truth is the heartwarming, emotional and funny story of Janice, an Indigenous woman adopted by a white family, who returns to the reserve in the wake of her birth mother's funeral. Janice finds herself struggling to find a place where the culture of her past can feed the truth of her present... connecting these two lives is proving to be a challenge.

Only Drunks and Children Tell the Truth is a story that straddles the line between realistic-comedy and tragedy with the four central figures balancing the spectrum of existence in Indigenous culture. It takes a peek into the mindset of a community rocked not only by a death in the family but forces a hard look into conflicts of identity, “the scoop” and life in Otter Lake.

“The play will have you laughing, while still maintaining a level of tension that feels like you’re taking a peek into a real life story,” says director Thom Currie. “It doesn’t shy away from tough subjects like death and loss of identity.  It deals with them in the way that Drew so often does: with a certain levity that makes sure the story is accessible to everyone.”

One of Canada’s most prolific Indigenous playwrights, author and humourist Drew Hayden Taylor has been a local favorite in Thunder Bay for many years. Magnus patrons will be familiar with his work from previous productions of his plays at Magnus Theatre, including 400 Kilometres, Dead White Writer on the Floor, The Berlin Blues, In a World Created by a Drunken God, and last season's hit, CREES IN THE CARIBBEAN.

The cast is made up of 4 of Canada’s busiest Indigenous performers: Samantha Brown plays Janice, her sister Barb is played by Julie Lumsden.  Dillan Chiblow plays Barb’s boyfriend Rodney, and Jeremy Proulx plays Tonto, Rodney’s brother. All four are newcomers to the Magnus Theatre stage.

Only Drunks and Children Tell The Truth runs from Thursday, October 26th to Saturday November  11th at Magnus Theatre with a Gala Performance on Friday, October 27th.
