THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO - April 16, 2018  (LSN)   In a surprise announcement at the orchestra’s Live @ the Abbey gala event this past Saturday, TBSO President, Linda Penner, announced that the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra has adopted a new logo—its first in 41 years.

The TBSO’s management began addressing the orchestra’s visual identity last year—at the same time the Board was renewing its strategic vision. Both board and management decided that the time had come to modernize the organization’s visual identity, to bring it in line with the TBSO’s goals and its unique place in Canadian culture.

The Board of Directors officially adopted the new logo on March 19, 2018.

“We agreed that we needed a striking new image that reflected the TBSO’s unique cultural assets,” says Penner. “The new logo was designed to reflect the intrinsic values of the TBSO brand: imaginative, educational, multi-culturally and regionally relevant, exciting and unique.”

The dominant elements of the new logo design are a flowing blue ribbon and abstracted letters spelling out T-B-S-O.

“The logo is a graphic interpretation of the lively movement of music and the aurora borealis” says McEachern, who designed the new logo. “The colours quite literally reflect the bright blue skies over sunny Northwestern Ontario, and the deep blue waters of Lake Superior—the most magnificent body of fresh water in the world.”

The organization’s previous logo, also designed by McEachern, was adopted by the organization in 1977, and has been a bold and successful identifier for the orchestra for over 4 decades. “While we were very attached to the old logo, the new logo represents the exciting new direction our organization is taking,” Penner says. “Stay tuned for our incredible upcoming season.”

The new logo fits in with the TBSO’s renewed mandate to educate, engage new and existing audiences, and enrich audiences through a classical voice unique to its region and people.
