SUPERIOR, WISCONSIN - February 7, 2019 (LSN) University of Wisconsin-Superior Theatre will present the drama “I and You” in the Experimental Theatre on the UW-Superior campus. Performances, directed by Kathy Laakso.
“The audience will experience an appreciation of life for what it can potentially hold for each of us,” said Laakso. “It is also a reminder that we all need each other, how important it is not to isolate ourselves from others, even if that connectedness can be painful.”
A sensitive new play by Lauren Gunderson, “I and You,” explores two young people’s perceptions of the world and how they approach life. Caroline, who has been ill all her life and is now waiting for a liver transplant to save her, is understandably angry at the world and doubtful that she will find peace and joy. Anthony is sensitive, curious and wistful about what the future and life may have to offer. Through a school English assignment, they’ve been brought together one afternoon to discuss a poem by Walt Whitman. As they share their interests, dreams and disappointments, they discover that as individuals, the “I and you”, there is a strong need for human connection, the “us”.
“As both a director and playwright, I have an interest in plays with only two characters,” said Laakso. “What do they talk about, what is it between them that needs to come out? What keeps the audience connected to just two people without the distractions, viewpoints and experiences that other characters can bring in to drive the direction of the play? It is a challenge to make these two characters compelling enough to keep the attention of the audience. The cast is very moved by and enthusiastic about this play. I think that the more we move through our rehearsals, they will find a connection to these two characters.”
