Winners of the 2017-18 Young Playwright’s Challenge Magnus Theatre

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO - June 22, 2018 (LSN) Magnus Theatre announced the winners of the 2017-18 edition of the Young Playwright’s Challenge on Thursday.
AT THE BREAK OF DAWN by Amy Poetschke took first prize, Phoebe Kine was the runner up with her play HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS, and Zachary Ross rounded out the top three with A JAZZY NIGHT. The winners each receive a cash prize, and their scripts workshopped by the Magnus Theatre in Education team.
The Young Playwright's Challenge gave me an opportunity to build my writing skills and develop my creativity for the stage." says Ross of the experience.
“The judges reviewed and adjudicated the scripts we received, based on our agreed upon criteria.” says Danielle Chandler, Magnus Theatre’s Theatre in Education Director. “They were looking for scripts that were original, captivating, easy to follow, showed knowledge of play structure and in which the characters developed throughout.”
This past season, Magnus revamped and relaunched the YOUNG PLAYWRIGHT’S CHALLENGE, after a hiatus of more than a decade. Scripts underwent an adjudication process, and a (winners last names) were chosen to have their scripts workshopped at Magnus Theatre.
A public reading of all three plays will take place Sunday June 24th at 2:00 pm.
The Young Playwrights' Challenge is a component of Magnus Theatre's New Play Development Program and Theatre in Education programs, which also include year-round theatre classes for all ages, March break and summer drama camps, workshops in schools, and two annual school tour productions that are performed in schools throughout Ontario.
