is a forestry company that consists of the First Nations of Aroland, Eabametoong and Marten Falls and is building capacity through a training program administered by Confederation College.  It was an opportunity for 10 trainees from the three First Nations to display their newfound skillset in the operation of mechanical harvesting equipment.  Just a few weeks earlier none of them had any idea what a feller buncher, skidder or harvesting processor looked like. Today, they are learning and adjusting very quickly to the fast-paced production environment. 

The Agoke Development Corporation (ADC) hosted Tigercat and Wajax Dealer representatives from Brantford, Hearst and Thunder Bay to an onsite training demonstration on May 28th in the Ogoki Forest.

COOK COUNTY, MINNESOTA - September 13, 2018  (LSN) The Cook County Airport Commission will hold an open house at the Grand Marais/Cook County Airport to unveil a new airport facility and 5,000-foot runway on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018 from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m.  

The new 5,000-foot runway can accommodate most large transport charter aircraft.  The new Arrival and Departure Building now boasts a large conference room, kitchen, two bathrooms and a large lounge/waiting area with TV and Broadband.

All joking aside, the event attracted just under 500 visitors from across Ontario and the U.S. Held June 7 to 9, it also generated more than $84,000 of direct visitor spending for the local economy, along with thousands of more dollars in spinoff and indirect commercial activity.

WTF, a.k.a. Way Too Funny, a.k.a. Warning: Too Funny, was established by Tourism Sault Ste. Marie, a division of the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation. The organization’s goal was to develop a major event to attract visitors before the start of the busy Agawa Canyon Tour Train season. Mission: accomplished.

TORONTO, ONTARIO   - August 27, 2018  (LSN) The United States and Mexico have made significant progress in discussions to revise key portions of the 24-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement, Minister Wilson made the following statement:
"With hundreds of thousands of jobs at stake, it is imperative that our country has a voice at the table and that a deal on NAFTA is reached.  The threat of auto tariffs on Canadian manufactured cars is extremely concerning to Ontario as 1 in 5 Ontario jobs depend on Canada-U.S. trade and investment.  I have asked Minister Freeland for a briefing as soon as possible, to ensure Ontario's automotive, steel and agriculture industries and their workers are top of mind in these discussions.

Summer Company is administered in the region by the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation. THUNDER BAY, ONTAIO - May 17^th, 2018 (LSN) Today, a training program that is designed for those looking to gain direct or indirect employment in the construction of the Wataynikaneyap Power Transmission Line was introduced in Northwestern Ontario, and is already being deemed a success by all participating partners. Wataynikaneyap Power, Opiikapawiin Services, Infrastructure Health & Safety Association (IHSA), PowerTel and Oshki-Pimache-O-Win Education & Training Institute have joined together to deliver training programs including Line Crew Ground Support Training, funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Skills and Partnership Fund. The First Nations have been working together since 2013 on community engagement, participation and capacity building to capture maximum employment, training and business opportunities. They recognized that it will be required to develop capabilities and initiate specific training for the people.

SAULT STE. MARIE, ONTARIO  May 14, 2018  (LSN) What impact does the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation (SSMEDC) have on the community? To answer this question while sharing information with citizens and partners, the organization released its 2017 Annual Report this week. The publication highlights activity and results generated. Staff presented the figures at the May 14 City Council meeting.

In 2017, the SSMEDC processed more than 1,900 inquiries from entrepreneurs and delivered over 950 client consultations. The organization also made 17 formal pitches to external investors and companies, facilitated 85 business support seminars and workshops, and took part in 66 outreach and networking events.
