THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO, - April 30, 2018 (LSN) Representatives of the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce have just returned from a successful meeting of the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC) in Hamilton. The two-day conference included presentations by Premier Kathleen Wynne, Ontario PC Opposition Leader Vic Fedeli, and Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath, as well as discussion and debate on a broad range of provincial issues that are impacting businesses including employment standards, infrastructure, competitiveness, and the growing skills shortage.
Thunder Bay successfully garnered unanimous support for its call for the Government of Ontario to develop a provincial forestry strategy that recognizes the growing value of Ontario’s renewable forests and to conduct socio-economic impact assessments of all legislation, regulation and policies that could reduce provincial fibre supply and/or reduce access to the land base/natural resources.
During Q&A with Premier Wynne, Charla Robinson, Thunder Bay Chamber President, reminded the Premier of her promise to exempt Northern communities from her government’s four percent (4%) increase in aviation fuel tax and questioned why that exemption is not yet in place. The Premier indicated that they are continuing to review the issue.
The AGM portion of the conference included the election of Charla Robinson to the OCC Board of Directors. Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce First Vice-Chair Nathan Lawrence is also a current member of the OCC Board as well as the Executive Committee. This is the first time that OCC Board membership includes both the President and the First Vice-Chair of the Thunder Bay Chamber.
