THUNDER BAY,  ONTARIO - August 8, 2019  (LSN)   The study finds more than 2 million Canadians aged 55 and older face significant barriers when accessing the health care system in their province, such as being unable to find a family doctor or experiencing lengthy wait-times for surgery, diagnostic tests, or specialist visits.

Moreover, most Canadians in this age group have at least some difficulty getting the care they want or need in a timely manner.

The study focuses on the health care experiences of older Canadians, as well as their assessments of the quality of care they receive.

North west Ontario physicians can now receive their patients’ reports from hospitals

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  - September 25, 2018 (LSN)   With less than a month until the legalization of recreational marijuana, a new study from the Angus Reid Institute finds Canadians are three times as likely to say that measures in the law will fail rather than succeed (57% versus 17%) at preventing minors from accessing cannabis after October 17, and twice as likely to say they lack confidence in the ability of their community police to assess and punish those driving under the influence of marijuana (60% to 32%).

Tuberculosis Update:
TBDHU continues to manage tuberculosis outbreak

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  August, 8, 2018  (LSN)  The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is continuing to manage an outbreak of tuberculosis in the city of Thunder Bay.  The outbreak was declared at the beginning of March.

To date, TBDHU has identified eleven cases of active tuberculosis in Thunder Bay associated with this outbreak. Most cases identified have occurred in individuals who lack adequate housing.  TBDHU staff has identified and are continuing to screen individuals who may have been exposed to active tuberculosis. TBDHU expects to identify additional cases through this screening process.

Cherie Kok has been selected to take over from Joan Williams, who had been with Hospice Northwest since 1993, when it was known as Via Vitae.

Cherie holds a BA in Psychology and a MA in Philanthropy and Development. Complimenting those educational achievements, she brings with her experience from both the non-profit and for-profit sectors, as the former Canadian Red Cross District Branch Manager, as well as 10 years with the Chartwell Retirement Residences, including positions in recreation, marketing and management.

Thanks to the Smilezone Foundation and the Staal Family Foundation, ten rooms at the hospital and children’s centre have received a bright, child-friendly makeover. The Smilezone team refurbished these ten rooms with fresh paint, bright murals, entertainment units, therapeutic equipment, and more – in hopes of improving the experiences of children while they receive medical treatment and therapy.

Fighting Prostate Cancer, One Ride at a Time

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO – June 16, 2018  (LSN)  The thunderous roar that marked the start of the Tbaytel Motorcycle Ride for Dad, presented by WINMAR was an in-your-ears reminder of the continued fight against prostate cancer in Northwestern Ontario. With hundreds of bikes revving their engines at once, the sound was deafening and brought with it an important message – we’re in this fight together and we won’t back down. The morning’s roar was not to be confused with the actual thunder storm that drenched riders late in the Ride in the afternoon.

Now in its 18^th year, the Tbaytel Motorcycle Ride for Dad, presented by WINMAR welcomed 249  riders and passengers and raised $75,541.63 , bringing the 18-year total to $1,077,896. All funds raised through the Northern Cancer Fund support prostate cancer education, care and research in Northwestern Ontario, with 100% of funds staying local.

 Lake Superior Research Institute to conduct beach monitoring

SUPERIOR, WISCONSIN – June 11, 2018  (LSN) The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) has awarded the contract for implementing the federal Beaches Environmental Assessment and Coastal Health (BEACH) Act in Douglas County to the Lake Superior Research Institute (LSRI) at the University of Wisconsin-Superior for the third consecutive year.

LSRI will monitor Lake Superior beaches for the presence of E. coli, a bacteria found in the environment that can make people sick, to reduce the risk of disease for users of coastal, recreational beaches in Douglas County. As part of this monitoring effort, LSRI will also collect sanitary survey data at each of the monitored beaches. These surveys are designed to collect data on parameters that may influence E. coli concentrations, such as wave height, water temperature, and number of gulls. Since bacteria samples have a short holding time of 24 hours, the proximity of LSRI’s laboratories, which are located on the UW-Superior campus, were a factor in LSRI being selected to conduct the testing.

We have a drug epidemic in Thunder Bay

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO -  April 22, 2018  (LSN For the past six years, I spend a considerable amount of time on the streets and in other places with those suffering from alcohol and substance abuse. Some are homeless, some engage in illegal activities that provide the drugs that their raging bodies scream for. Some have become sex trade workers.   I have listened to the horrors of their inner pain and struggles.  I have held many with tears and I have smudged with many. 

I listen to stories about the gangs from Ottawa and Toronto—how these gangs operate on “crack for credit” This operation of “lending” crack is contributing to the drug epidemic in Thunder Bay.  In addition, it is a known fact that crack cocaine is being laced with fentanyl and the gangs hunt for the vulnerable ones—ones that may be homeless, ones that live in specific low income areas. These gangs “lend” crack in exchange for the use of the borrower’s home which in turn, is used for the gang’s drug base.

The addition of Dr. Osman and his knowledge and experience improves our capacity to provide much needed vascular services, closer to home, for patients across Northwestern Ontario. Dr. Osman joins our other vascular surgeon, Dr. Mary MacDonald, who joined our team in October of 2016.

This year’s event sold out quickly and raised $84,637.48, bringing the twenty-year total to $1,247,180.48!!

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  -  March 26, 2018   (LSN)  A new report indicates that the rates of opioid-related harms measured by healthcare system use are higher in Thunder Bay District than the rest of Ontario. The Opioid Use and Impacts in Thunder Bay District report released today by the Thunder Bay Drug Strategy and the Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) is the first collaborative data compilation effort to provide information about local trends in opioid-related harms. The report, presented at the Northwest Region Opioid Strategy Event held at the Da Vinci Centre, provides a perspective on how the opioid issue in our District has changed and the factors that may be contributing to its growth. 

The report shows that in 2016, 53 emergency department visits for opioid toxicity per 100,000 people were reported in the Thunder Bay District, compared to 32 per 100,000 reported in Ontario; and that methadone is the most commonly detected opioid at death due to opioid overdose. In Ontario, fentanyl is the most commonly detected opioid at death due to opioid overdose.

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  March 23, 2018  (LSN)  On the eve of World TB Day, March 24, 2018, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit continues to manage an outbreak of tuberculosis in Thunder Bay. Currently, TBDHU has identified eight cases of respiratory tuberculosis, and is contacting people who may have been exposed. Most cases identified to date have occurred in individuals who lack adequate housing. TBDHU is holding clinics at Shelter House for anyone who is currently homeless or underhoused.

Tuberculosis is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is treated with antibiotics. Infection with M. tuberculosis ranges from asymptomatic, latent tuberculosis infection to symptomatic, active tuberculosis disease.

The government of Ontario had committed to creating 5,000 new long-term care beds by 2022 and over 30,000 new beds over the next decade which was outlined in their recent paper, Aging with Confidence: Ontario’s Action Plan for Seniors, and reiterated in the Fall Economic Statement. THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  February 6, 2018 -   (LSN) Thunder Bay District Health Unit is recommending that clients of two Thunder Bay colon cleansing services get tested for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV.  

An infection control investigation conducted by the Health Unit has determined that clients who received colon cleansing services operated by Natural Health and Chiropractic, located at 817 Victoria Avenue East, and the Colon Therapy Clinic, located at 267 Park Avenue, may have been exposed to improperly cleaned instruments. These clients may be at risk for a variety of bloodborne, sexually-transmitted and enteric infections.

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  - January 13, 2017  (LSN) The Health Unit is advising the public that carfentanil - a dangerous opioid - may be present in street drugs in Thunder Bay after a laboratory report confirms that a urine sample from a local resident tested positive for the drug.

“Carfentanil is a toxic opioid that is more potent than fentanyl and is sometimes mixed into street drugs,” said Dr. Emily Groot, Associate Medical Officer of Health for the Thunder Bay District Health Unit.  “Street drugs contaminated with carfentanil have been detected with increasing frequency in Canada, and this is the first confirmation we have of it in Thunder Bay.”

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO - December 13, 2017  (LSN) The Superior North Emergency Medical Services and the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Center (TBRHSC) have joined forces to implement a process which will see paramedics transmit positive ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) 12-leads to an interventional cardiologist at the TBRHSC which will see the patient by-pass the Emergency Room and go directly to the Cardiac Catheter lab for treatment.

This new procedure will see paramedics assess their patient and obtain a 12-lead Electrocardiogram (ECG) at the scene. They then interpret the ECG to determine if there is ST elevation, which is often indicative of a Myocardial Infarction, otherwise known as a heart attack.

Retinal Imaging Camera Unveiled Thanks to Visionary Donors

Thunder Bay, ONTARIO  – October 17, 2017   (LSN) It was a day of celebration inside the Lions Vision Care Centre at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre as a new Retinal Imaging Camera was unveiled. The Camera is a specialized piece of equipment that allows ophthalmologists to properly see and monitor damage to retinas, caused by a variety of medical conditions, including diabetes. 

This Camera comes at a cost of $160,000, which was fully funded thanks to donations, including significant gifts from Lions Clubs, which have always been very supportive of ophthalmology needs at the Health Sciences Centre, having already given over $800,000 since 1998. Last year, they announced gifts totaling $75,000 to the Retinal Imaging Camera (from Lions Clubs from Thunder Bay, Northwestern Ontario and Manitoba, along with Lions Clubs International). 

Staying Up-To-Date with Screening Can Reduce the Risk of Cervical Cancer

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO –  October 16, 2016  (LSN)  October 16 to 20 is National Cervical Cancer Awareness Week, and Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, in partnership with Cancer Care Ontario, is encouraging women to stay up-to-date with regular Pap tests. It is estimated that in 2017, about 710 women in Ontario will be diagnosed with cervical cancer and about 150 women will die from the disease.

“In our region, only 59 percent of women have been screened for cervical cancer,” said Dr. Naana Jumah, Regional Cervical Screening/Colposcopy Lead for the Northwest region. “Regular screening is important because it can find changes in the cervix before it turns into cancer. Cervical cancer is almost entirely preventable with regular cancer screening.”

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO -  October 11, 2017 -  (LSN)  Over 2017, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has seen an increase in the number of cases of invasive group A streptococcal (IGAS) infections in our community. This infection develops when the bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes gets into the blood, joints, lungs, or lining of the brain. Streptococcus pyogenes also causes more common diseases, like strep throat and minor skin infections.

Anybody can get an IGAS infection. However, in our area, IGAS reflects health inequities, and infection most commonly affects a very vulnerable group of people: individuals who have significant underlying illnesses, lack adequate housing, or use injection drugs. IGAS infections tend to be more common in the fall and winter, so we are expecting more cases.

Free Radon Kits for Oliver Paipoonge and Marathon

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  ---   October 2, 2017  (LSN)  The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is inviting residents of Oliver Paipoonge and Marathon to participate in a study to measure radon levels in their homes. Free radon home-testing kits will be available to 220 eligible households in Oliver Paipoonge and 150 eligible households in Marathon. The information gathered from the kits will help the TBDHU identify radon levels in those municipalities.  

A 2015 study of radon levels conducted by the TBDHU found that 16% of homes tested in Thunder Bay had high radon levels, which was much higher than the provincial and national averages. That study also found that radon prevalence increased in the more rural areas of the city. 

Luncheon of Hope Celebrates 25 Years

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO Sept3mb34 29, 2017  (LSN) It was a sight to see today as over 400 women filled the ballroom at the Victoria Inn to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Tbaytel Luncheon of Hope. Smiles and laughter were prominent, with a few tears shed too, in memory of those who’d passed on from breast cancer.

This year’s luncheon had a local focus, with organizers choosing to profile local breast cancer survivors and healthcare professionals. While each speaker had a unique message, two themes emerged; that of hope and an ever-changing landscape in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

TRYPS - the Tobacco Reduction in Youth Partnerships (TRYPs) program - collaborates with schools and organizations on activities that focus on reducing commercial tobacco use among young people in Northwestern Ontario. Through TRYPs, groups can receive funding for their smoking-reduction focused activities along with program support from public health youth engagement staff.
