Toronto, Ontario August  28, 2017 – (LSN)  Following news of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet shuffle today, Ontario’s doctors look forward to building a working relationship with the new federal Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor.

Physicians in Ontario currently face grave uncertainty following federal Finance Minister Bill Morneau’s proposed federal tax changes for incorporated professionals. With approximately 20,500 doctors in Ontario holding private corporations, we hope that Minister Petitpas Taylor will act as an advocate for physicians against these changes.

If implemented, these proposals will have a strong impact on patient care and make our nation an undesirable place to practice medicine. Many of our rural communities still suffer from a shortage of doctors, and if these new tax measures come into effect, our best and brightest physicians will leave the country, and new doctors will choose to practise elsewhere.

The effects will be felt throughout Canadian communities, as the proposed tax changes will impact all small corporations, including store owners, financial advisers, insurance brokers and others. Together, we form the backbone of many local economies.

The Government of Canada must take the time to listen to the impact these proposals will have on businesses throughout the nation. Together, we look forward to working with Minister Petitpas Taylor on addressing these issues and protecting patient care.
