After careful review, the membership of TBPA is taking the above-said reports very seriously and understands the expressed concerns of the Indigenous community. That said, we feel that the OIPRD report does not highlight the hard work of the TBPA members that is done on a daily basis within the community of Thunder Bay, nor does it mention the high Solve Rate for violent crime in the city. THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  - December 4, 2018   (LSN) The Thunder Bay Police Service officer who is the subject of an investigation under the Police Services Act regarding the December 1, 2018 Egan Street incident, is currently on leave.

The officer is receiving medical treatment as a result of an exposure to bodily fluids which occurred during her physical contact with a 17-year-old female at the Egan Street residence.

The total taxes owed by Essar-Algoma from the time they went into CCAA until now is more than $36 Million and the city only got just over $20 Million. The Mayor is misrepresenting the facts.

High Bids Rejected and Proposed Capital Projects Deferred

COOK COUNTY, MINNESOTA - July 25, 2018 (LSN)  The proposed Hovland Public Works Garage and Community Center Warming House capital projects will be deferred after attempts to value engineer the bids received by the County, were unsuccessful.

On June 26, the Board voted to accept the lowest bid on all three of the County’s proposed major capital projects contingent on the ability to value engineer each of the projects within the fiscal constraints of the allocated budget. Attempts to negotiate the two contracts to meet the budget constraints were made over the last few weeks, by County Administrator Jeff and were subsequently rejected when price tags remained too high.

A record high amount of $118,800 was awarded to 31 youth from Thunder Bay and the District of Thunder Bay including Geraldton, Marathon, Nipigon-Red Rock and Manitouwadge. The reception was filled with love, pride and joy for the many wonderful recipients from their loved ones; donors and friends of the Foundation; and the Board, Alumni and staff of the Thunder Bay Community Foundation. “We are overwhelmed with gratitude that our donors have been so generous and have allowed us to give out 17 awards to 31 youth”, said Bonnie Moore, Executive Director.

The Flame of Hope will start its journey into Cook County when US Customs & Border Protection Officers accept the beacon from Canadian Customs & Border Services Officers at the Grand Portage US Port of Entry.

Customs & Border Protection Officers and/or family members will carry the Flame of Hope from the Border up Mount Josephine and through the Village of Grand Portage. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office, along with County staff and partners, will deliver the Torch through the rest of the County to contribute to its journey on the North Shore Final Leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

FORT WILLIAM FIRST NATION (June 6, 2018)— Glen Hare has been elected as the new Anishinabek Nation Grand Council Chief by Anishinabek Nation Chiefs following a traditional stand-up election in Fort William First Nation.

Candidates Chief Shining Turtle and former Anishinabek Nation Deputy Grand Council Chief Glen Hare participated in a stand-up election today at Grand Council Assembly in Fort William First Nation. Anishinabek Nation Chiefs elected the new Grand Council Chief. Chief Shining Turtle had 10 votes to Glen Hare’s 30.

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO - June 3, 2018   (LSN)  Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) has released an interim report following an Indigenous-led summit held in Ottawa last week to explore moving beyond the Indian Act.

“It is clear that the only way to redress the harms done through the imposition of colonial top-down structures through the Indian Act is to empower communities to chart their own self-determined futures. To achieve this, there must be support for Indigenous communities to develop their own vision for what lies beyond the Indian Act,” said Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler. “We hope this report will be used as a roadmap by the Government of Canada and we look forward to moving forward on these recommendations.”

Construction Season Begins with Lutsen Bridge

LUTSEN, COOK COUNTY, MINNESOTA  - May 23, 2018  (LSN)  Cook County’s first construction project of this season is underway at Lutsen Mountains.  Work to replace the timber bridge just past the Eagle Ridge Check-in near the end of Highway (Hwy) 5, began this week.

Construction will occur Mondays through Fridays, and work will pause for the Lutsen 99er race, June 22-24. The new bridge will be wider for drivers and skiers, and features ornamental lighting and a decorative finish. Lutsen Mountains Corporation funded the architectural elements of the project.

The Cook County Emergency Services Conference will be taking place on Friday, April 27 and Saturday, April 28. As part of the conference, many of Cook County’s emergency responders, including the Fire Departments, Search & Rescue and Law Enforcement, will be participating in field exercises in the City of Grand Marias. On Saturday, you may see a number of people down by the harbor near the East Bay at the Grand Marais Rec Park. These responders will be completing Cold Water Rescue Training through a variety of techniques and may be in the water with immersion suits.  Rotations of this exercise will take place at 10 am, 1 pm and 3 pm.

LUTSEN, MINNESOTA  April 9, 2018   (LSN) On Saturday, April 7, Cook County Emergency Management, Lutsen Fire Department & EMS, and the Lutsen Mountains Ski Patrol welcomed the Minnesota Aviation Rescue Team (MART) to work through how the special helicopter rescue team could assist to get people out of the gondola cars in the event of an emergency. MART is a joint effort of the St. Paul Fire Department and the MN State Patrol and includes 21 highly trained aerial rescuers and five State Patrol helicopter pilots.

“Clearing the snow around a fire hydrant is an easy way for residents to lend a hand to improve community safety,” said Chief Ben Silence. “In the event of a fire, firefighters have to locate and shovel out fire hydrants before hooking up to them. During emergencies every second counts; when fire hydrants are clear of snow and ice it saves valuable time, which can also mean saving lives and property.”

COOK COUNTY, MINNESOTA -  February 23, 2018  (LSN)  The Sheriff’s Office is advising residents of a telephone scam occurring locally involving a voice reporting to be with the Grand Marais Public Utilities Commission (GM PUC). Reports to the Sheriff’s Office and state the that the caller says they are with GM PUC claiming the resident is behind payment, requiring them to make good on the bill by providing credit card information immediately or their power will be shut off within 15 minutes. If the recipient expresses doubt in the legitimacy of the call, the scammer tells them to check their Caller ID. Upon doing so, they will see that the number shown is indeed that of GM PUTIL/City Hall 218-387-1848 – a trick often used by telephone scammers.

The plaque memorializes Miss Black, who was the first female president of the Ontario Library Association in 1917.  The plaque is engraved with these words:  Miss Black was a fearless library leader of her time who introduced innovative approaches to library services and exerted significant influence in support of culture, education and the library profession beyond her own city.  Miss Black led a remarkable career as Chief Librarian, Fort William Public Library, now known as Thunder Bay Public Library, 1909 – 1937.

In 2016, City Council adopted the Stormwater Management Plan, outlining stormwater management goals and objectives for the next 20 years. TBDSSAB Operation Budge 2018

THUNDER BAY, ONTARTIO  -  January 8, 2018 – (LSN)  The District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administration Board (TBDSSAB) approved the 2018 operating budget totaling $106.7 million. This represents a $7.1 million increase over the prior year’s budget of $99.6 million. This increase is due to additional financial assistance to Ontario Works (OW) clients, an increase in homelessness prevention activities, child care expansion, and the transfer of the EarlyON Child and Family Centres to TBDSSAB.
