NEEBING, ONTARIO - September 29, 2017 (LSN) the Municipality of Neebing welcomed members of the public to an Open House and ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the re-opening of Blake Community Hall after a summer of renovations. Local MPP Bill Mauro congratulated the Municipality and its team of volunteers on the work done with the $30,000 Ontario150 Community Capital Program grant made earlier this year.
“I’m pleased to know our government has provided $30,000 from a fund celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday, to upgrade and maintain a building that is approaching its 100th birthday,” said Bill Mauro, MPP for Thunder Bay–Atikokan. “Blake Community Hall provides a great location for Neebing residents to come together as a community. This money will go towards ensuring the building will be even more accessible to those who wish to use it.”
Administered by the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), an agency of the Government of Ontario, Ontario150 Community Capital Program grants are helping non-profit organizations, municipalities and Indigenous communities renovate, repair and retrofit existing community and cultural infrastructure. The one-time, Ontario150 grant has been designed to help honour Ontario’s past, showcase the present and inspire future generations.
Blake Hall is used by a variety of community organizations for meetings, celebrations, training, and social and cultural events. In just over one week, the annual “Harvest Dinner” will take place here, prepared, organized, and staffed by the dedicated volunteers of the Neebing Recreation Committee. Recently completed renovations, made possible by the OTF grant, included fire safety upgrades, accessibility upgrades, floor and wall re-finishing, drainage improvements and the refurbishing of the boards for the outdoor hockey rink.
“The impact of this Ontario150 Community Capital program grant cannot be underestimated,” said Karen Coulson, Chair of the Neebing Recreation Committee. “Our 94-year-old hall is a community gem. Keeping it current, safe and accessible are priorities for the Committee.”
