THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO - May 12, 2018  (LSN)  Kristen Oliver announced that she is joining the race for City Council of the Westfort Ward. The lifelong resident of Westfort, filed her nomination papers at City Hall today.

Oliver is the Executive Director of the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association (NOMA). She oversees the advocacy and lobbying efforts of NOMA and attributes this role as the main driver to seeking office on the municipal level.

“I have long been advocating and addressing the issues of our community,” said Oliver. “I know firsthand the challenges we face with infrastructure funding, the dire need to address our social issues and improving the economy for Thunder Bay. I believe that my experience and knowledge of the issues is needed to move our community forward.”

Oliver has a substantial record of volunteering in the community. She currently serves as a Board of Governor for Confederation College and is Vice President of the Northwood Hockey League. She is also the past president of Leadership Thunder Bay and has served on parent council as well as other community groups.

“I am proud to call Westfort home. My husband and I are raising our two young sons in this area because you have a sense of belonging and that you are truly part of a neighbourhood. I am passionate about Westfort and committed to making it the best it really can be,” added Oliver.

Her campaign will revolve around making Thunder Bay a welcoming community. “While this sounds like such a simple statement, it really is the basis for attracting developers, people and talent to Thunder Bay. We need to harness the opportunities for growth. As the largest city in the northwest, we should be focusing on our strengths and showcasing what we have to offer. I am confident that I will bring a fresh perspective to the table and look forward to giving Westfort a voice in council chambers,” said Oliver.
