Thunder Bay City Council Squandered Trust Part One

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO - September 28, 2018 (LSN) This account of the event centre initiative, commonly referred to as the “Event Centre Fiasco” in Thunder Bay, from its inception to its eventual failure is presented from the point of view of a citizen. It raises questions respecting what goes on inside the “black box” of the decision-making process at city hall.
It suggests, without stating outright, a public policy initiative plagued from the start by everything from groupthink to manufactured consent. Political and administrative action is intertwined. The council supports the corporation but the corporation has a vested interest in the continued success of the council. It presents a dysfunctional process seemingly doomed from the start, yet unstoppable.
Urban planners, political scientists, schools of administration, and journalists may all find something of interest here. Not to mention ordinary citizens like the presenter of this video, trying to navigate the mercurial unfathomable seas of the public policy process.
It is a plea for respect for the ordinary citizen from elected representatives, administrators and, most particularly, from members of the fourth estate who have not been an ally of the legitimately concerned public who have attempted to shed a light on the privileged machinations going on inside the black box of public policy.
