Junot Avenue Starts June 17 Road Construction

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  - June 14, 2019 (LSN) Road construction on Junot Avenue, from Walkover Street to John Street, is scheduled to start on Monday, June 17. The road will be closed to through traffic during the construction with local access only. Detour signs will be posted.

Construction will continue for the full construction season and is expected to be completed by late fall.

Construction will include road widening to four lanes, asphalt resurfacing, extended active transportation trails, new sidewalks, underground municipal service work, curb and gutter work, and a new pedestrian crossover at the intersection of Junot Avenue and Windsor Street.

During the construction, transit bus routes 9 Junot and 11 John will be detoured. There will be no service between John Street and Walkover Street, all stops will be removed from service. More details about these detours can be found at: https://www.thunderbay.ca/transitservicealerts/.

Motorists and pedestrians are asked to use extra caution and obey all posted signage when travelling near the construction area.

June 10th  Road Work Donald Street

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  - June 7, 2019 (LSN) Road construction and sewer & water work on Donald Street, from Vickers Street to May Street, is scheduled to start on Monday, June 10, and will take place in two phases.

On Monday, June 10, phase one of the Donald Street construction will start on the sections from Syndicate Avenue to Brodie Street, and Syndicate Avenue to Vickers Street. Construction will include asphalt resurfacing, curb and gutter work, new curb extensions, new sidewalks, public realm improvements, and sewer and water work. This phase of the construction is expected to be completed in October.

The second phase will start on Monday, June 24, on the section from Syndicate Avenue to May Street. Construction will include asphalt resurfacing, curb and gutter work, curb extensions, new sidewalks and public realm improvements. This phase of construction is expected to be completed in three weeks from the start date. 

During construction, transit routes, stops and the City Hall transfer hub will be affected. On June 10, Transit service to and from City Hall will be detoured with some stops out of service. All affected stops will be updated on www.nextlift.ca.  

Buses will park at the transfer hub in their scheduled locations. On June 24, buses at the City Hall transfer hub will not be parked on Brodie St. or Donald St. More information will be posted on those detours next week. Details for all transit impacts will be available at www.thunderbay.ca/transit.

Signs will be posted for pedestrian routes during sidewalk construction. Access to the Victoriaville Parkade will be through Syndicate Avenue. Construction notices have been sent to those property owners adjacent to the construction.

June 3rd Road Work Schedule Season Underway

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  - June 1, 2019 (LSN)  – The City of Thunder Bay is investing $30 million in 2019 on road and sidewalk rehabilitation, residential paving, sanitary and storm sewers, watermain repair/replacement, bridge and culvert work, and streetlight renewal.

This month marks the start of a busy road work season in Thunder Bay, and road work can result in road closures, detours and delays for drivers. All residents are reminded to reduce their speed, be alert, watch for workers, and drive with extra care in construction zones. 

Summer also brings with it numerous community events to engage residents and visitors alike. These often result in temporary street closures. Again, residents are reminded to obey detours and drive with extra care in the vicinity of these closures so everyone can enjoy the events in a safe environment.  

Temporary street closures for events will be in effect at the following locations:

• Lyon Boulevard, from Arundel Street to Current Avenue, Lyon Boulevard West from Arundel Street to Algoma Street, Arundel Street, from Lyon Boulevard to Lyon Boulevard (one lane), and Current Avenue, from Lyon Boulevard to Cuyler Street, on Saturday, June 1, from 9:50 am – 12 pm, for Thunder Bay Metre Eaters’ June Classic 5 & 10 km Race
• Saul Laskin Drive, from Bobby Curtola Drive South to Bobby Curtola Drive North, on Sunday, June 2, from 8:30 am – 2 pm, for the Walk for Arthritis
• Waverly Street, from Banning Street to Algoma Street, and Algoma Street, from Waverly Street to Bay Street, on Sunday, June 16, from 11:30 am – 1 pm, for the Thunder Pride Association Parade
• Bobby Curtola Drive, from Saul Laskin Drive South to Saul Laskin Drive North, and Saul Laskin Drive, from Bobby Curtola Drive South to Bobby Curtola Drive North, on Friday, June 21, from 9 am – 11 pm, for National Indigenous People’s Day,
• Waverly Street, from Secord Street to Red River Road, and Park Avenue, from Secord Street to Waverly Street, on Saturday, June 22, from 9 am – 6 pm, for the Finn Festival Event
• Bobby Curtola Drive, from Saul Laskin Drive South to Saul Laskin Drive North, Saul Laskin Drive from Bobby Curtola Drive South to Bobby Curtola Drive North, and Sleeping Giant Parkway from Saul Laskin Drive South to the Skatepark, from Wednesday, July 3 at 6 am, until Monday, July 8 at 6 pm, for Thunder Bay Blues Festival 
• Bobby Curtola Drive, from Saul Laskin Drive South to Saul Laskin Drive North, and Saul Laskin Drive from Bobby Curtola Drive South to Bobby Curtola Drive North, on Friday, Aug. 9, from 3 pm – 9 pm and Saturday, Aug. 10, from 11 am – 9 pm, for BrewHa Festival

Road Work Ahead:

The following areas are scheduled for, or are currently undergoing, road and other major infrastructure work that is expected to affect traffic:

Sewer and watermain work

• Road rehabilitation and storm sewer work continues on Blucher Avenue
• Balmoral Street, between Oliver Road and John Street, will be closed to through traffic to facilitate storm sewer construction starting in late May, for approximately 4-5 weeks. Local access only and access to George Burke Park will be at Montgomery Street.
• The west portion of Shuniah Street, north portion of Huron Street, the east portion of Otto Street and the south portion of Albany Street are currently having watermains cleaned and then cement mortar lined. Work involves excavating pits in various locations to access the watermains. The streets are drivable.
• Central Avenue, between Balmoral Street and the Central Avenue Tap House, is currently under construction to have the existing watermain replaced. The work is off the road and will only have minor impacts to traffic at the Central Avenue and Amber Drive intersection.
• Hinton Street, between Crescent Avenue and Whalen Street will be closed to through traffic due to the reconstruction of the sanitary sewer and watermain. The road will also be resurfaced. Work is expected to take up to eight weeks to complete.
• Sewer and water replacement, and road reconstruction is scheduled for Syndicate Avenue North, Pruden Street, McKellar Street, Dease Street and Finlayson Street. There will be local access only in areas impacted by the construction. Roads will be closed to through traffic. Work will continue for the full 2019 construction season.

Road, street lighting, bridge and sidewalk improvements

• Residential resurfacing work is scheduled to begin on Huron Crescent, McBean Street, Tokio Street, Phyllis Street, Cardinal Court, and Moodie Street.
• Sidewalk reconstruction is scheduled on sections of Crawford Avenue, Brown Street and McKellar Street. There will be disruptions to local access within the work areas.

The above list includes major, traffic-affecting construction. Other work, including sidewalk replacements and curb and gutter repairs, is scheduled for residential areas and other areas around the City. Schedules are subject to change. For more information, visit: thunderbay.ca/roadwork
