THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO Fort William First Nation - June 4, 2019 (LSN) – On November 22, 2018 Chief and Council put forth a community notice advising all members on FWFN Reserve lands that until affective and meaningful consultation was conducted and until administrative measures be put in place so to protect the health and safety of our community all cannabis related industries which include grow-ops and dispensaries are prohibited within FWFN reserve lands.
Since the inception of this moratorium FWFN administration has been working diligently at educating ourselves on the cannabis industry so to better represent this here in our community. This includes the development of the FWFN Cannabis Committee whose role is to hold community discussions on regulations and by-laws and to assist with the development of a community survey.
To date the FWFN Cannabis committee has still one major task of getting a door to door survey and membership at large survey completed. This exercise will help guide our leadership in making an informed decision which we anticipate to be completed within the next couple weeks.
Please accept this community memo as FWFN Chief and Councils official response to any person(s) intent on opening retail cannabis outlets or setting up grow-ops within FWFN reserve lands.
Until further notice all cannabis related industries which include grow-ops and dispensaries are prohibited within FWFN reserve lands any and all actions contrary to this community directive will be treated as unlawful and will held accountable to the full extent of the law.
NOTE: No permission has been granted to any person(s) to open any retail outlet on FWFN Reserve Lands
Respectfully,
Ken Ogima
Chief Executive Officer
