Traffic Study Taking Place at Proposed Roundabout Location

Victoria Ave Roundabour
#LSN_News Victoria Ave

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  - February 21, 2019 (LSN)  The City’s Engineering Division will be undertaking a traffic study in the area of the proposed roundabout on Victoria Avenue. The intent of the study is to determine the requirements for traffic control at the Victoria Avenue and Lillie Street intersection, and/or the Victoria Avenue and Ford Street intersection.

“During the study, the City will also be assessing community traffic concerns,” said Matthew Miedema – Project Engineer. “We will be collecting data on traffic volumes, collisions, speeds, delays, congestion and pedestrian crossings. Once the study is completed, the findings and recommendations to manage traffic and pedestrian activity in this area for the long-term, considering both safety and efficiency, will be presented to City Council in May 2019. ”

During this study, the traffic signals at the intersection of Victoria Avenue and Lillie Street will be deactivated, and stop signs will be installed at the north and south approaches on Lillie Street.  Through traffic on Victoria Avenue will be free-flowing.

The Engineering Division will monitor this intersection to confirm traffic congestion and delays as well as the impacts on the surrounding residential streets. If at any time during the study it is determined that the signals at Victoria Avenue and Lille Street are required, the signals can be reactivated.

Current information from previous traffic counts indicates these signals are not warranted based on traffic and pedestrian volumes, but are required to reduce delays for City Transit buses and vehicles turning left from Lillie Street onto Victoria Avenue.

The traffic study will begin on Tuesday, February 26, and will continue for a 30-day period. Depending on the results of the study, the signals at Victoria Avenue and Lillie Street may be reactivated on or before Wednesday, March 27.

For more information, or if you have any questions or comments about this study, contact the Engineering Division at 625-2266 or visit the Victoriaville Civic Centre, 2nd Floor, 111 Syndicate Avenue South.
