RED LAKE, ONTARIO - January 13, 2019 (LSN) On February 7, 2019 at 7:06 pm the Red Lake OPP received a report of an animal attack from staff at the Red Lake Margaret - Cochenour Memorial Hospital in Red Lake. A 38 year old female had attended the hospital with wounds to her legs indicating she had been attacked by a "large black dog like animal". The victim had been walking her dog in the area of Edward Ave in Cochenour (Red Lake) when confronted by the animal. She stepped in between to protect her dog and the animal bit her several times. The victim managed to kick the animal until it ran back into the bush. The victim then sought medical attention. OPP officers attended the scene but were unable to locate the animal.
At this time police are unable to confirm if it was a wolf or a large black dog. The OPP_NWR Twitter page mistakenly referred to it as a "wolf" in one of its tweets today and apologizes for any misunderstanding. The tweet has since been removed. The Town of Red Lake, MNR, By-Law and OPP are working together to determine the best course of action. The investigation is ongoing.
The OPP remind the Public to be alert at all times when walking your pets. Pubic Safety is paramount and if you ever feel threatened by an animal (wild or domestic) please contact the Red Lake OPP.
