THUNDER BAY, Ontario  – June 27, 2019  (LSN) – Special Olympics Thunder Bay surprised 15 local athletes with the announcement that they will compete as part of Team Ontario at the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games being hosted in Thunder Bay in February 2020. Each athlete first qualified at the regional level and ultimately earned their Team Ontario spot after competing at the Provincial Games in January 2019.

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  -  June 17, 2019  (LSN)  - Former Thunder Bay Border Cats pitcher Brandon Williamson has agreed to a professional contract with the Seattle Mariners.  Williamson, who played for Thunder Bay in 2017, became the second highest Border Cats alum selected in the MLB Draft when he was taken in the 2nd round, 59th overall, by the Mariners earlier this month.  The lefthander, who attended Texas Christian University, signed with Seattle for $925,000.

 THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO -  March 12, 2019  (LSN) Lakehead Thunderwolves’ forward Daniel Del Paggio scored a goal and added an assist as Canada blanked Kazakhstan 3-0 to win the bronze medal at the 29th Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.

The host Russian team, which defeated Canada 5-1 in the semi-final, took the gold medal with a 2-1 win over Slovakia.

Del Paggio averaged a point per game in Russia, recording four goals and three assists in Canada’s seven contests.

According to Iain Angus, the Chair of Volunteers and Accreditation for the 2019 TELUS Cup, it is essential for the smooth operation of the tournament that a range of positions be filled by local volunteers. “Given that the proceeds of the TELUS Cup will go to supporting local hockey development, the more volunteers that we have the less we will have to spend to run the tournament” he said. “This is a significant operation and volunteers are key to it being a success.”

The Heartland Division remains at six teams.  However, the Chicago FC United has moved over to the Great Lakes division and is replaced by a new team out of Green Bay, WI.
