THUNDER BAY, Ontario  – June 27, 2019  (LSN) – Special Olympics Thunder Bay surprised 15 local athletes with the announcement that they will compete as part of Team Ontario at the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games being hosted in Thunder Bay in February 2020. Each athlete first qualified at the regional level and ultimately earned their Team Ontario spot after competing at the Provincial Games in January 2019.

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  -  June 17, 2019  (LSN)  - Former Thunder Bay Border Cats pitcher Brandon Williamson has agreed to a professional contract with the Seattle Mariners.  Williamson, who played for Thunder Bay in 2017, became the second highest Border Cats alum selected in the MLB Draft when he was taken in the 2nd round, 59th overall, by the Mariners earlier this month.  The lefthander, who attended Texas Christian University, signed with Seattle for $925,000.

 THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO -  March 12, 2019  (LSN) Lakehead Thunderwolves’ forward Daniel Del Paggio scored a goal and added an assist as Canada blanked Kazakhstan 3-0 to win the bronze medal at the 29^th Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.

The host Russian team, which defeated Canada 5-1 in the semi-final, took the gold medal with a 2-1 win over Slovakia.

Del Paggio averaged a point per game in Russia, recording four goals and three assists in Canada’s seven contests.

He suited up for 20 games with the Komets in the fall, scoring 4 goals and 7 assists for 11 points before deciding to leave Fort Wayne and enroll at Lakehead for the winter term.

The addition of the new franchise will become official once receiving final approval from Hockey Canada and the Canadian Junior Hockey League.

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  -  February 8, 2019  (LSN) Canada’s national Midget hockey Championship is being held in Thunder Bay this April and the organizers need over 200 volunteers to ensure that it runs smoothly.

According to Iain Angus, the Chair of Volunteers and Accreditation for the 2019 TELUS Cup, it is essential for the smooth operation of the tournament that a range of positions be filled by local volunteers. “Given that the proceeds of the TELUS Cup will go to supporting local hockey development, the more volunteers that we have the less we will have to spend to run the tournament” he said. “This is a significant operation and volunteers are key to it being a success.”

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  –  Juarary 30, 2019  (LSN)  USL League Two (previously the PDL) released the 2019 schedule today including the 14-game regular season schedule for the Thunder Bay Chill.  The Thunder Bay Chill will be celebrating their 20th season in the league opening on the road facing Kaw Valley FC on May 24th and the St. Louis Lions on May 26th.

The Heartland Division remains at six teams.  However, the Chicago FC United has moved over to the Great Lakes division and is replaced by a new team out of Green Bay, WI.

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  -  November 18, 2018  (LSN)  The Tournament Centre was filled with action once again this weekend as the 25th annual Thunder Bay Women’s Hockey Association’s  - Chill tournament was playing.  This year’s event brought together teams with players as young as 4 years old and upwards of 17 years old.   This stellar all girls tournament saw players from across Northwestern Ontario from Marathon/Longlac to Kenora.

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO – November 13, 2019  (LSN) The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Tuesday the rosters for its upcoming All-Star Game & Skills Competition, which goes Wednesday, Nov. 28 at Ice for Kids Arena in Fort Frances.

The two team line-ups for the contest will once again feature a Canada vs. USA format made up of players from both countries from the six SIJHL member clubs.

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO – November 12, 2019  (LSN) The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Thunder Bay North Stars forward Ben Erwin has been named its  Player of the Week for the period ending Nov. 11.

In two games last week the 19-year-old Thunder Bay product notched a league-best seven goals and chipped in with three assists in a pair of North Stars victories vs. Minnesota.

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO -  November 10, 2018  (LSN)  The York Lions scored three unanswered goals in the third period to defeat the Lakehead Thunderwolves 4-2 before a crowd of 2,203 at the Fort William Gardens on Saturday night, giving the Lions a weekend sweep over the Wolves.

TORONTO, ONTARIO -  November 6, 2018  (LSN)  For the first time in over four years, the Lakehead Thunderwolves have broken into the U SPORTS Hockey Top 10 rankings. The Thunderwolves are off to a good start this season and with a record of 7-2 in OUA play and 11-3 overall, and came in ranked #10 in the country in the latest poll released today.

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO – November 5, 2019  (LSN) The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Thief River Falls Norskies goaltender Fletcher Bolda has been named its Play It Again Sports Player of the Week for the period ending Nov. 4.

In two road starts over the weekend, the 19-year-old from Alpena, Mich., won both of them in backstopping the Norskies to a pair of victories.

TORONTO, ONTARIO -  November 4, 2018  (LSN)  The Lakehead Thunderwolves defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues in dramatic fashion by winning 5-4 in overtime at the Varsity Arena on the U of T campus on Saturday night. It was a game in which the Wolves never held the lead until the match was finally over, closed out by an amazing play Lakehead’s Patrick Murphy.
