THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO - August 25, 2018 (LSN) Lakehead University and the Thunderwolves hockey team are pleased to announce that defenceman Chase Stewart has committed to the program, pending the outcome of an NHL tryout with the Ottawa Senators in early September. If he makes the Senators’ squad or its AHL affiliate in Belleville, he will continue his pursuit of a professional hockey career immediately. Otherwise, Stewart will suit up for Lakehead this fall.
The 6’2”, 225-pound rearguard from Marathon, Ontario played four years of major junior hockey, his first two in the OHL with the Saginaw Spirit. He played his final two seasons in the QMJHL, the first of which was in Saint John where he won the league championship and played in the Memorial Cup tournament. He finished his junior career with Rimouski the following season, where he served as an assistant captain and recorded 29 points.
“I’m excited to make the commitment to Lakehead,” Stewart said. I would be proud to be represent the Thunderwolves."
Thunderwolves’ Head Coach Andrew Wilkins is pleased that Stewart has committed to Lakehead over any other university. “Chase is a defenceman with a physical presence and well-rounded game. We wish him all the best with the Senators, but if it doesn’t work out he will be a welcome addition to our blue line."
